you’re standing in line at the grocery store.
The person ahead of you is fumbling with coupons. Your phone is dead.
What the fuck are you supposed to do now? Actually, wait? Like some kind of savage?
A study found nearly half of people would rather shock themselves than sit alone for 15 minutes. We have a serious problem with boredom.
Boredom isn’t empty time; It’s not just the absence of stimulation. It’s a signal that we’re not meaningfully engaged. The goal isn’t to be bored constantly, it’s just to stop reflexively avoiding boredom at all costs.
So, how do you embrace boredom? Start small. Leave your phone behind for an hour. Take a walk. It might feel uncomfortable, but stick with it. You never know what you might find.
Don’t fight boredom; Go forth and be fucking bored.
